National Cherry Day!

Here at Langage Farm, we love any opportunity to celebrate the very best of British agriculture. With summer in full bloom across our gorgeous Devon countryside, we are looking forward to a very special date on the calendar: National Cherry Day on Thursday 16 July 2026.

For us, this day is about far more than just enjoying delicious fruit. It is a time to appreciate the incredible landscape around us, support British fruit farming, and indulge in the authentic flavours of the season.

The History Behind National Cherry Day
National Cherry Day was launched in England in 2008 by the British food writer Henrietta Green. It formed part of CherryAid, a campaign created to draw attention to the alarming decline of cherry orchards across England and Wales. Over the course of the twentieth century, the country lost a massive proportion of its traditional orchards, with some estimates putting the loss as high as 90 per cent. The result was that native cherries became harder to find and increasingly had to be imported.

While Kent is the traditional heart of British cherry growing, the loss of these beautiful orchards is felt right across the UK rural landscape. As traditional orchards were grubbed up for development or more profitable crops, vital ecosystems were disrupted. Cherry blossom feeds early pollinators and bees in the spring, while mature trees support local insects and birds.

Thankfully, this national campaign has helped turn the tide by giving cherry lovers a yearly reason to buy, cook, and enjoy seasonal cherries. Choosing British cherries in season supports local growers and helps keep orchards in the ground rather than under concrete.

Spotlight on Our Farmhouse Cherry Yogurt
To mark the occasion this year, we are shining a light on one of our absolute favourite treats from our dairy: Langage Farm Farmhouse Cherry Yogurt.

Like all of our products, our cherry yogurt is handcrafted with care right here in our farm creamery by our dedicated local team. We believe that great flavour starts at the very beginning. That is why we use the freshest, richest milk from our own herd of Jersey and Guernsey cows, who spend their days grazing happily on Devon’s lush pastures.

We take that beautifully creamy, fresh yogurt and layer it with a vibrant, sweet cherry compote. It is a wonderfully balanced, simple treat that highlights the natural sweetness of summer fruit. Because we focus on quality and traditional methods, we are proud to be year after year winners of lots of awards for our dairy range.

Simple Ways to Enjoy Cherries This July
Cherries are genuinely good for you—they are rich in fibre, vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants, and are even studied for their anti-inflammatory properties and natural melatonin content which helps regulate sleep. If you are looking to join in the celebrations, here are a few simple ways to enjoy cherries alongside our dairy range this week:

The Ultimate Breakfast Bowl: Spoon some of our Farmhouse Cherry Yogurt into a bowl and top with a handful of fresh, sweet British cherries and a sprinkle of granola.

A Summer Cherry Cream Tea: While we love a classic strawberry jam, trying a rich sour cherry preserve on your scones is a delicious twist. Just remember the golden, historic rule established in Devon back in the 11th century at Tavistock Abbey: it must always be cream first! Smooth a generous dollop of our famous Devonshire Clotted Cream onto your scone before adding your cherry topping.

Share Your Cherry Celebrations
How are you planning to mark National Cherry Day this year? Whether you are picking up a pot of our Farmhouse Cherry Yogurt, making a recipe using fresh sweet cherries, or baking a classic cherry pie to serve with our luxury ice cream, we would love to see.
