Devon Jubilee Picnic Hamper

Forget sarnies this summer – it’s all about the Coronation Chicken Picnic Pasty! Paired with Squealer Pork Pies and followed by a proper Devon cream tea with Langage Farm clotted cream.

To celebrate 70 years of lovely Queen Liz, Chunk of Devon have put one of the classic British sandwich fillings, and the very recipe developed for her coronation in 1953, into a pasty this summer!

As with any new Chunk product, there were various iterations of the Coronation Chicken pasty made before it was perfect, meaning oodles of pasties for the team (called the ‘hunks’) to try every week. Director at Chunk, Simon, cooked up numerous marinade concoctions to get the mayo – yogurt balance just right and kept tweaking the spice level before the final recipe was decided. Chunks of chicken, with succulent sultanas and apricots in a creamy curried mayonnaise with just the right amount of spice to give it a kick, all stuffed into their signature buttery pastry.

Whether the bunting is going up for a gigantic street party with neighbours or simply some alfresco dining with friends, Chunk’s Jubilee Hamper offers something a bit different and quintessentially British to delight guests.

“We’re keeping it local, using Devon suppliers to create a deliciously Devon hamper,” explains Simon. “Our partners at Langage Farm have given us some of their quality clotted cream from their Jersey cows to top your scones (before the jam, of course – but that’s a discussion for another day!).” The strawberry jam in the hamper comes from Hogsbottom Preserves down the road in Crediton and the Breakfast Tea bags are from Devonshire Tea in Ivybridge.

“We’re delighted to partner with another respected and innovative local Devon brand,” says Langage Farm’s Head of Sales & Marketing Steve Davies. “When I heard about Chunk launching a Coronation Pasty to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee I was delighted to join forces to create the perfect hamper meal – a savoury coronation pasty followed by a delicious cream tea with Langage Farm supplying our renowned luxury Devonshire clotted cream.”

Simon and his wife Suzi, along with the rest of the team at Chunk have been making gourmet pies and pasties, using top-notch ingredients in Ottery St Mary since 2006 and have won over 200 awards for their rustic goods.
