Happy Cream Tea Day!

Friday 26th June is National Cream Tea Day!

Because if there is one thing we know about in Devon, it’s a proper, glorious cream tea. It’s not just a treat. It’s a way of life. And we have over a thousand years of history to back that up.

Put the kettle on. Let us explain.

It All Started in Devon — Over 1,000 Years Ago. The cream tea was born right here in our county — and it began not in a tearoom, but in a monastery.
Back in around 997AD, the Benedictine monks of Tavistock Abbey were rebuilding after a Viking raid and began feeding their workers with bread, clotted cream and jam. And in doing so, they accidentally created one of the greatest British traditions of all time.

Devon and the World Record If further proof were needed of Devon’s passion for the cream tea, in 2013 Langage Farm staged the world’s largest Devon Cream Tea — because when Devon does somethng, Devon does it properly.

The Great Debate — Cream First or Jam First?
Here in Devon, the answer has always been — and will always be — cream first.Spread that gorgeous, thick, golden clotted cream generously across your warm scone first, then add the jam on top. The cream is the star. It always has been. Cornwall does things differently, of course — and while we have enormous respect for our neighbours, on this particular matter we must respectfully but firmly disagree. The Devon way is the original way. The way the monks of Tavistock intended. Over a thousand years ago.
Cream first. Always.

Our Devonshire Clotted Cream
At the heart of every great cream tea is the clotted cream — and ours is something we are genuinely, enormously proud of.
Langage Farm Devonshire Clotted Cream is made by hand in our Devon creamery, by local people, using the richest milk from our beautiful Channel Island cows. Thick, golden, gloriously indulgent and utterly authentic — it is everything a proper Devon clotted cream should be.We are year-after-year winners of numerous awards for quality and taste, and our clotted cream sits right at the heart of everything we do.

One Last Thing
Of course, we don’t actually mind how you take it.
Cream first, jam first, on fine china or straight from a paper bag on a clifftop. Earl Grey or builder’s tea. Grand hotel or picnic blanket on the moor.
Do it however makes you happiest.
The only thing we will always, always insist upon is this — make it with the very best of the West Country.
