From Food Waste to Green Energy: Langage AD’s Remarkable Journey

Here at Langage Farm, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a way of life. Our Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facility, known as Langage AD, plays a pivotal role in our commitment to reducing waste and producing clean energy. Let’s take a closer look at how Langage AD is changing the game.

A Powerhouse of Sustainability

At Langage AD, we’re all about converting food waste into something truly extraordinary: biomethane. This remarkable process allows us to generate both heat and electricity, contributing to the energy needs of our dairy products factory and the farm itself. But Langage AD’s impact doesn’t stop there; it’s an essential part of our Closed Loop System, connecting Langage Farm Dairy and our AD plant in a harmonious circle of sustainability.

The Birth of a Closed-Loop System

Our journey towards sustainability and energy independence began when Langage Farm decided to invest in Anaerobic Digestion (AD). This decision wasn’t just about reducing waste; it was a strategic move to ensure the fertility of our farm soils and to provide a reliable source of electrical and thermal energy for our dairy products factory. We envisioned a closed-loop system where resources flowed seamlessly.

The Magic of Anaerobic Digestion

So, how does it work? Anaerobic Digestion uses specialised bacteria to break down organic matter, transforming it into a valuable methane-rich gas. At Langage AD, we utilise production waste from our dairy products factory and food waste from local businesses, including schools and restaurants, as feedstock for our AD plant. This waste isn’t discarded; it’s transformed into something incredibly useful.

A Sustainable Circle of Life

The AD plant produces electricity and heat that are put to good use in our dairy products factory. But that’s not the end of the story. The residual biofertiliser produced by the AD plant is applied to our farmland, enriching the soil and enabling us to grow high-quality forage for our Jersey Herd. This forage, in turn, produces the milk that returns to the products factory for processing, completing the sustainable cycle.

Powering Homes and Beyond

Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond our farm and factory. Any surplus electricity generated by Langage AD doesn’t go to waste. Instead, it’s exported to the National Grid, where it can power up to 500 households! It’s a testament to our dedication to making a positive impact on the environment and the wider community.

At Langage AD, we’ve taken a simple concept—converting food waste into clean energy—and turned it into a powerful force for change. We’re not just a farm; we’re a hub of innovation and sustainability, and we’re proud to be pioneers in the quest for a greener, more sustainable future.

So, the next time you enjoy a scoop of our delicious ice cream or a dollop of clotted cream on your scone, remember that it all starts with our commitment to sustainability, from food waste to green energy, and back again. Together, we’re making a world of difference, one sustainable step at a time.
