At Langage Farm, we’re passionate about more than just delicious dairy – we’re also big believers in looking after our beautiful Devon countryside. That’s why we’ve taken a bold (and rather brilliant) step towards sustainability with our very own Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant – and we think it’s something worth shouting about!
So… What Is an AD Plant, Exactly?
Great question. In simple terms, an AD plant takes waste – like leftover food and by-products from the dairy – and breaks it down using natural processes to produce energy. It’s a bit like composting, but on a high-tech, super-efficient scale. The result? Green electricity, heat, and a natural fertiliser that helps local farms thrive. Clever, right?
From Moo to Methane: How It Works
Here’s the journey:
Waste In, Wonders Out – We feed the plant with organic waste, including some from our own production process (like whey and food waste).
The Magic Happens – Inside the sealed tanks, friendly bacteria get to work, breaking everything down in an oxygen-free environment.
Green Energy – This process creates biogas, which we use to generate electricity and heat for the farm and nearby businesses.
Nothing Goes to Waste – What’s left behind becomes a nutrient-rich fertiliser, which is returned to local farmland.
Why We Love It
We’re incredibly proud that our AD plant helps us:
Reduce waste and our carbon footprint 🌍
Generate renewable energy ⚡
Support a circular economy in our local community 🌱
It’s part of our wider mission to produce exceptional dairy products while protecting the environment that helps make them so special.
A Sustainable Spoonful
So the next time you’re enjoying a pot of our rich, creamy yoghurt or a scoop of our dreamy clotted cream ice cream, you can smile knowing that behind the scenes, Langage Farm is working hard to be kinder to the planet – one spoonful at a time.
