Bumblebees on the Farm – Why These Tiny Workers Matter
July is peak buzzing season at Langage Farm — not just in the creamery, but in the hedgerows, fields, and flower borders too. One of our favourite signs of summer? The gentle hum of bumblebees at work.
These little pollinators may be small, but they play a huge role in our environment — and in many of the delicious products we make right here on the farm.
Why Bumblebees Matter
Bumblebees are essential for pollinating all kinds of crops and wild plants, especially in the UK. Without them, we wouldn’t have:
- Fresh fruit like strawberries, raspberries, and apples
- Wildflowers and native hedgerow plants
- The biodiversity that supports birds and other wildlife
Here at Langage, bees help pollinate some of the fruits used in our ice cream and yogurt ranges — so when you’re enjoying a scoop of Strawberries & Clotted Cream or a pot of fruit yogurt, you’re tasting the results of their hard work.
How Langage Farm Supports Pollinators
We’re committed to creating a bee-friendly environment on and around the farm. Here’s how we help our stripy friends:
1. Wildflower Planting
We allow parts of our fields to bloom naturally, giving bees a rich source of nectar and pollen throughout the summer months. These wild areas aren’t just beautiful — they’re buzzing with life.
2. Hedgerow Management
Rather than cut everything back, we allow our hedgerows to grow thick and full during summer, providing food, shade, and shelter for bees and other insects.
3. Low-Pesticide Approach
We’re careful about what we use on the land. Our digestate fertiliser is natural and bee-safe, and we avoid harsh sprays wherever possible.
4. Education and Awareness
Through farm visits, social media, and blog posts like this, we love sharing knowledge about Devon wildlife — encouraging everyone to do their bit for bees, whether that’s planting lavender in the garden or supporting local food systems.
