The Scoop on Ice Cream: A Sweet History to Celebrate National Ice Cream Month

Did you know July is officially National Ice Cream Month? Yes, a whole month dedicated to one of life’s simplest (and most delicious) pleasures — and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate than with a scoop or two of Langage Farm ice cream.

A Cool Treat With a Rich History

Ice cream has come a long way from its ancient roots. The earliest versions of iced desserts go back thousands of years, with records showing that Roman emperors sent runners into the mountains to collect snow, which they flavoured with honey and fruit. Later, during the 17th and 18th centuries, frozen desserts became popular in royal courts across Europe — but they were still a rare luxury for most.

By the time Victorian Britain arrived, clever advances in ice storage and dairy processing brought ice cream to the masses, particularly by the seaside — think striped deckchairs, flake cones and pastel shades of nostalgia. It’s no surprise that it’s remained a firm British summer favourite ever since.

Our Devon Take on a Classic

At Langage Farm, we like to think we’ve given ice cream the proper Devonshire treatment. That means:

  • Using rich, creamy milk from our own Jersey and Guernsey herd

  • Keeping production small-batch and local, right here on our farm near Plymouth

  • Crafting indulgent flavours that balance tradition and innovation

We’ve always believed in quality over quantity. Whether you’re enjoying our classic Vanilla Clotted Cream, the ever-popular Chocolate Overload, or a scoop of Strawberries & Clotted Cream on a warm summer’s day, you can taste the difference that fresh, local dairy makes.

Favourite Flavours for Summer

Not sure where to start this Ice Cream Month? Here are a few Langage favourites worth trying in July:

  • 🍫 Chocolate Overload – for the serious chocoholic

  • 🍓 Strawberries & Clotted Cream – summer in a scoop

  • 🍪 Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough – creamy with a cookie crunch

  • 🍯 Krunchie – honeycomb pieces folded into velvety dairy

  • 🌿 Mint Chocolate Chip – fresh and nostalgic

(And yes — we make every one of them right here on the farm.)

Celebrate Your Way

July is all about enjoying the sunshine, school holidays, family picnics, beach days and — of course — good food. Whether you’re planning a BBQ in the garden, heading for a walk on Dartmoor, or simply need a treat to end the day, ice cream is the perfect companion.

This month, why not build your own sundae bar at home? Try topping scoops with fresh berries, clotted cream, local honey, or a dusting of crumble for a DIY dessert everyone will love.

And remember: Langage Farm ice cream is available in shops and farm stores across the South West (and beyond) — or pop into our own farm shop for the freshest pots direct from the source.
