National Ice Cream Day

There is nothing quite like the feeling of a sun-drenched afternoon in the Devonshire countryside, looking out over the rolling green hills towards Dartmoor or catching a glimpse of the sparkling sea in the distance. And what is the absolute finest way to cool down when our mild Devon climate heats up? A scoop (or three!) of luxurious, velvety ice cream, handcrafted right here on our working family farm.

With National Ice Cream Day arriving on Sunday, 19th July 2026, we are getting ready for the ultimate dairy celebration! It is the perfect excuse to champion the local people, our incredible Jersey and Guernsey cows, and the pure joy of a decadent, creamy treat.

Grab a spoon and dig into the fascinating history, fun facts, and a little bit of local pride that makes this day so special.

National Ice Cream Day is celebrated every year on the third Sunday of July. In 2026, the big day lands on 19th July.

The day actually sits right in the middle of National Ice Cream Month (the whole of July!). It gives us a whole month to appreciate the hard work of our farm team, our gorgeous cows, and, of course, the finished product.

While humans have been enjoying cold treats for thousands of years—with ancient empires mixing snow with honey, fruit, and nectar—the official celebration we know today has a surprisingly presidential origin:

  • The Presidential Proclamation: In 1984, US President Ronald Reagan declared July as National Ice Cream Month and established National Ice Cream Day. He described ice cream as a “fun and wholesome food” enjoyed by the vast majority of the population. The celebration quickly leaped across the Atlantic, and food lovers in the UK have been enthusiastically celebrating it ever since!

  • Royal Beginnings in the UK: Long before it was a public holiday, ice cream was a luxury reserved strictly for royalty. In fact, the very first recorded serving of “iced cream” in England was at a feast for the King at Windsor Castle way back in 1671! Back then, only those sitting at the King’s table were allowed to try it. Thankfully, today, we make our award-winning tubs available to everyone!

To help you impress your friends while enjoying a cone, here are some of our favourite ice cream facts:

  1. Fifty Licks to the Finish: On average, it takes about 50 licks to polish off a single scoop of ice cream on a cone. Why not grab a tub of our Madagascan Vanilla and test the theory?

  2. Brain Freeze is Real: Ever got a sudden headache from eating your ice cream too fast? That “brain freeze” happens when the cold ice cream touches the nerves on the roof of your mouth, causing the blood vessels in your head to rapidly dilate. The scientific name for it is sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia—but we prefer just calling it a sign of eating too fast!

  3. The Power of Air: Did you know that one of the most important ingredients in ice cream is actually air? It is gently whipped into the mixture during the churning process to give the ice cream its smooth, light, and scoopable texture.

  4. The UK’s Giant Record: The world’s largest ice cream cone was actually constructed right here in the UK in Gloucester back in 2012. It stood an astonishing 13 feet tall and weighed over 2,200 pounds!

  5. The Milk Behind the Magic: It takes about 12 pounds of milk to produce just one gallon of ice cream. Because our cows live happy, outdoor lives grazing on lush Devon pastures, the milk they produce is naturally rich and extra creamy, which is why our ice cream tastes so spectacularly decadent.

At Langage Farm, we are year after year winners of lots of awards for our incredible dairy range. We believe the secret to the perfect scoop lies in keeping things local and traditional.

Our luxury ice creams and sorbets are handcrafted in our farm creamery by local hands, using only the freshest milk from our Guernsey and Jersey cows. From classic clotted cream and strawberry to our luxurious caramel and chocolate flavours, there is a tub to suit every sweet tooth.

hether you are digging into a scoop at home, enjoying a family picnic with views of Dartmoor, or adding a dollop of our famous Devonshire Clotted Cream on top of a warm summer dessert (remember: cream first!), we want to see it!
