Afternoon Tea Week 2024

This week is Afternoon Tea Week!  A perfect excuse to put the kettle on and serve up some treats!

Afternoon Tea, as we know it, began in the early 19th century with Anna, the Duchess of Bedford. In the mid-1800s, the Duchess found herself feeling peckish in the late afternoon, a gap between luncheon and dinner. To remedy this, she began inviting friends to join her for a light meal of tea, sandwiches, and cakes in the afternoon. This informal gathering soon evolved into a fashionable social event, and the tradition of Afternoon Tea was born.

The practice gained popularity throughout England, especially among the upper classes, and soon became a staple of British culture. It is now enjoyed by people of all backgrounds and has evolved into a formal affair, complete with elegant china, delectable pastries, and a variety of teas.

Fun Etiquette Tips
Afternoon Tea is not just about the food; it’s also about the experience. Embracing the etiquette of Afternoon Tea can make the occasion feel even more special. Here are a few tips to ensure you’re doing it right:

Tea First: Always pour the tea first before adding milk. This ensures that the milk doesn’t curdle when it hits the hot tea.

Scones: The traditional debate is whether to spread the cream or jam first. In Devon, we proudly spread the clotted cream first and then add a layer of jam on top. This method is believed to enhance the flavour and texture.

Finger Foods: Afternoon Tea is traditionally eaten with your fingers, not cutlery. This includes sandwiches, scones, and pastries. Of course, do ensure your hands are clean!

Gentle Conversation: Keep the conversation light and pleasant. Afternoon Tea is a social event, so it’s the perfect time to catch up with friends or family in a relaxed setting.
