AD PLANT

From field to fridge…and back again!

Did you know we are the first UK carbon neutral dairy with an Anaerobic Digestion facility (AD) generating electricity from food waste which supplies the Farm and Dairy with its energy needs? We also produce green energy that goes back into the National Grid to supply homes with the power to boil a kettle for their cream tea! Find out more about our award winning system.

ABOUT THE PLANT...

Langage Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facility is comfortably nestled in the beautiful Devon countryside just outside the City of Plymouth. It is part of an award winning Closed Loop System consisting of Langage AD, Langage Farm and Langage Dairy Products.

Our history starts in 1952 when the Harvey family bought the farm; we then added the dairy in 1980 and completed the Closed Loop System with the AD plant in 2010. Since then we have gone from strength to strength and have been fortunate enough to pick up many sustainability and business awards.

THE FARM

The farm grows lush grass using bio-fertiliser (digestate) from the AD plant to feed its stunning Jersey herd, it then produces the rich jersey milk which is turned into many award winning dairy products such as clotted cream, ice-cream and yoghurt. Wastes from both the product outlets and the Dairy Produce Factory are brought back to the AD plant to produce the electrical power, heat and fertilisers which are required to run our Closed Loop System. In doing this we close the loop on our food production and reduce power consumption, making Langage truly green and carbon neutral.

Did you know one of the partners of the farm did his dissertation on the Anaerobic Digestion process? We really take our time to understand and ensure that what we do is good for the environment!
