Friday 27th June marks National Cream Tea Day – and at Langage Farm, we’re proudly raising our scones to celebrate the true home of this delicious tradition: Devon!
Now, let’s get one thing straight from the start – cream goes first. No ifs, no buts. That’s the Devon way, and frankly, the only way. (Cornwall, we love you – but putting jam before cream? That’s just not how Granny taught us.)
A Creamy History: Devon’s Scone-ting Glory
The origins of the cream tea go back over 1,000 years, right here in sunny Devon. (Okay, sometimes sunny.)
According to local legend – and the ever-reliable monks of Tavistock Abbey – in the 11th century, they served up bread with clotted cream and strawberry preserves to hungry workers restoring the abbey. Thus, the cream tea was born – in Devon.
By the 19th century, this delightful tradition had become a staple treat for tourists and locals alike, especially with the arrival of the railways bringing eager cream-tea lovers from across the country to sample our golden cream and soft, fluffy scones.
The Great Cream Debate
Ah, the age-old battle: cream or jam first?
In Devon, we spread the cream first, like butter – thick, luxurious, golden clotted cream – then top it with a dollop of jam.
In Cornwall, they dollop the jam first, then add the cream. (We’ll just leave that there.)
But whatever your preference (even if it’s wrong), National Cream Tea Day is the perfect excuse to pop the kettle on, grab a scone (or three), and enjoy a moment of pure West Country bliss.
Celebrate the Devon Way – with Langage Farm
Here at Langage Farm, we’ve been lovingly crafting award-winning Devon clotted cream for generations. Made using rich milk from our own Jersey and Guernsey cows, it’s the perfect partner to a warm, freshly-baked scone and a generous spoonful of jam.
So this National Cream Tea Day, celebrate the Devon way:
☑️ Cream first
☑️ Locally made clotted cream
☑️ A strong cup of tea (milk last, thanks!)
☑️ Fierce pride in a tradition that started right here in our glorious county
Happy National Cream Tea Day from all of us at Langage Farm – where the cream is always first, and always from Devon!
