On Wednesday 9 September, farms, food producers and MPs across the country celebrated Back British Farming Day. It’s the NFU’s annual celebration of the people who grow, rear and make our food.
Here’s how to back British farming from your own kitchen.
Did you know that the UK makes over 700 different types of cheese, and farmers look after 71% of the nation’s landscape? Not bad for a sector that starts work before most of us have found the kettle. Plus, the wider UK food and drink manufacturing sector, built on British farming, contributes a staggering £162.3 billion to the economy and supports 4.1 million jobs.
Autumn is when British produce really shows off, from apples and blackberries to blackcurrants. We think blackcurrants and cream is a pretty good idea, too.
So this Autumn, pull on the wellies and take a walk through the countryside that British farmers look after. Just remember to follow the Countryside Code.
Back British Farming Day may only come round once a year, but backing British farming is easy to do all year. Choose local when you can, share what you love, and every so often, treat yourself to something delicious from Devon.
